What Have I Been Reading?

The Great Gatsby

Inspired to dig into this classic after attending an exhibit at the Minnesota History Center on the 100th anniversary of this well-known work. They were honoring our hometown author and his reference to "My Middle West". The story captures the era of the 1920's and the yearning of the characters to be part of something. While it is easy to get lost in the richness of the language the story still resonates after all these years.

Into the Bright Sunshine

An incredibly well researched book  chronicling the improbable story of a young Hubert Humphrey and his relentless struggles in battling for a more inclusive and better nation. His efforts to promote racial justice, starting even before becoming mayor of Minneapolis, transformed the Democratic Party. It was an uphill battle with countless setbacks and challenges many of them coming from his adopted hometown.

A Walk in the Park

Park memoir, part travelogue but at its essence a love story to the Grand Canyon.  The author and his photojournalist partner are totally unprepared for the physical challenges inherent in their quest to traverse the length of the canyon.  They make it due to the expertise and generosity of more experienced hikers, who share their admiration for the native people who first inhabited this place and the hidden treasures in the less traversed depths of this natural wonder.
