A couple of years ago I got the idea of traveling Route 66 in honor of my 66th birthday. I didn't realize at the time that 2026 was the 100th Anniversary of the Mother Road. It turned out to be the perfect time to travel America's Main Street. We drove from Chicago to Santa Monica in two weeks, encountering people from around the world who were as interested as fellow Americans in visiting the hotels and diners in the small towns that had been abandoned by the introduction of the interstate. A well-needed reminder of the resilience of people in this country who have overcome adversity and hardship through our history and who find comfort and encouragement in their connections with people they meet along the journey.
